Fussell taught English at Connecticut College, Douglass College, and finished her Ph.D. at Rutgers University before moving to New York City. In the 1980s she left teaching to write full time. She is the author of twelve books, and her essays on food, travel and the arts have appeared in magazines and newspapers as varied as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Saveur, The New Yorker and Vogue.
