Uyematsu is a 3rd-generation Angelino. She has written five poetry collections, the two most recent being "Basic Vocabulary" and "The Yellow Door.” Now retired, Uyematsu taught public high school math for 32 years. She was also active in the early development of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center and co-edited "Roots: An Asian American Reader.”
