avatar for Wargirl

WARGIRL draws influence from The Upsetters, War, Iggy Pop, The Clash and early Fela to make their version of Southern California garage rock. Sometimes subversive lyrics are counterpointed against groovy, danceable rhythms and jammy afro-beat and Latin America inspired grooves.

Musically, WARGIRL is mainly comprised of talented ladies approaching music in a unique kind of way. Artist Marika Dahlin (who met guitarist Wignall while doing work with Water Wells For Africa), handles lead vocals. Long Beach’s motorcycle personality Tamara Raye is on bass. Enya Preston plays organ and keys, and then it’s a 3 piece rhythm section with Ecuadorian Erick Nieto and Charis Ashcraft on hand drums, and Jeff Suri on kit, who incidentally grew up drumming under the training of Stephan Hodges (Tom Waits, Mavis Staples).

WARGIRL grew out of friends playing music at Tackyland recording studio in Long Beach, California. In fact, Tackyland is almost the first band member of War Girl, given that it had the space and energy to support the creation of deep, honest analog sound—the kind of vibe that infused songs like “Hang Me Out To Dry” and “Hospital Beds” for the Cold War Kids, which were recorded at Tackyland by WARGIRL guitarist Matt Wignall years prior.

The band will soon be releasing their first EP of songs on new Swedish label LAB259 this spring.
